CES Media Engagement FAQ

The questions brands ask us most about running media at an international trade show like CES — timing, meetings, embargoes, and what actually happens on the floor.

How far in advance should you start planning CES media outreach?
Six months out for the best results, and more if you're entering a new market with no existing media relationships. Journalist calendars at CES fill up months ahead, so the brands that earn coverage are the ones booking while others are still deciding whether to exhibit. A compressed program closer to the show can still work, but the tier-one slots go early.
How do you book media meetings at CES?
Through relationships and lead time, not a mass email in December. Priority journalists and analysts are approached months ahead with a specific, relevant angle, then confirmed and scheduled into a tight on-site itinerary. The reason an agency can fill a schedule is that the reporters already know the team and take the call.
What does a PR agency actually do at CES?
Before the show — strategy, target lists, pitching, briefings, media training, and embargoed pre-briefs so coverage is ready on day one. During — running the meeting schedule, wrangling media on the floor, and turning briefings into live coverage. After — follow-up, a coverage and share-of-voice report, and handing the momentum to your go-to-market team.
Is CES worth it for a smaller or first-time brand?
It can be the single best moment to enter a market — if the media work is done properly. A small or first-time brand doesn't get the built-in coverage a household name does, which makes the pre-show relationship building the whole game. Show up with a booth and no media plan and CES is an expensive week; show up with booked briefings and it's a launchpad.
How do media embargoes work around CES?
An embargo lets you brief journalists before the show under an agreed release time, so polished coverage breaks the moment you announce instead of scrambling afterward. It only works with reporters who trust the source to honour the terms — another reason relationships matter. Getting the embargo strategy and timing right is often the difference between leading the news cycle and chasing it.
Does an international brand need a local team for CES?
Almost always. CES is a North American media moment, and the journalists who matter are a specific, local roster — a brand flying in from Europe or Asia has no standing relationships with them. A local partner who can also brief in the brand's own language is what closes that gap, and it's a large part of what iPR does.
